I guess my question was more out of the box can I stand up a syncroton
instance without any modification and use it with a compatible IMAP
server? I took a look at the source code and documentation on the wiki
but I am none the wiser.

Syncroton was deliberately launched jointly by Kolab Systems and METAWAYS as a
solution independent Open Source component that can provide this functionality
independent of any backend.
That's why it has its own web page and mailing lists:
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" \
href="http://syncroton.org">http://syncroton.org</a> <a \
class="moz-txt-link-freetext" \
href="http://lists.syncroton.org/mailman/listinfo/devel">http://lists.syncroton.org/mailman/listinfo/devel</a>
Syncroton is currently used and maintained by Kolab and Tine2.0.
So in short: Yes, you would be very welcome to adopt Syncroton for your own
solution and contribute to Syncroton development jointly with the rest of us.
Best regards,
Georg
