I am not a koffice developer, so please forgive me my intrusion.
I am supproting Werner's idea because, as he said himself, you are only 
gaining advantages.

One of the advantages not mentioned yet (IMHO), is the "gaining manpower" 
advantage.
As you are able to use third party programs to assist in the conversion 
process, you are getting something that would have taken one out of our own 
group weeks or even months to achieve.
I think the kdeprint filter plugin system is a good example. It just uses 
ps2pdf while coding a pdf writer would have been a really big project.

Moreover you're opening th filter buisiness to developers that don't (like) 
to do C++.
