I am happy to see that someone else feels the need of a good HTML filter for KWord.

However, John Califf's message has raisen a few questions:

- Is there anything wrong with the current ASCII filter? I have looked at it quickly and I
  cannot see anything wrong. (The export filter *does* write a file!)

- If Docbook is so valuable, perhaps it would be worth to have an import filter for it too!
  (No! I am *not* volunteer to write it!)

- Should I take the maintainership of the HTML filter? It would mean a complete re-write.
  I can at least do an export filter on the base of the (KWord's) AbiWord filter (it would lack
  the ability of exporting tables in a first phase!) I have already tried to debug the old HTML
  export filter but with no result (but crashes)!
  I have no ideas yet how to do a HTML import filter but KHtml shows how it can be done.
  If I can use KHtml directly is another story, as KHtml is made for viewing an HTML page,
  not just for decoding it!
  And yes, I have already written HTML pages by hand, so I know the file format!

converts one line and the plain text filter didn't even write to a file

Working on text and html filters would be a VERY good task for a new
koffice developer, in that it's not too complex and is very do-able with
immediate results.  The import filters also need some work.

Kword would make an excellent html editor with the filters working
properly.  Html and whatever will replace it, like xhtml, is a very
common format.  It will be some time before people start exchanging
files in .kwd format, it they ever do, so saving in html format or
docbook xml from which a doc can be converted to html would be very
useful and would do more than any one thing to increase usage and
acceptance of kword and koffice in general.
The .kwd format is of course very useful and necessary for printing and
saving work in progress and embedding components and lots more, but it
is very unlikely that the final save format will be .kwd for most
documents.
