Hi, I've just finished the minutes for yesterday's meeting concerning Kivio.

David

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minutes of the 13/02 irc meeting

Subject:
The revival of Kivio and the introduction of three new contributors to the
Koffice project.

The meeting started with the presentations. The 3 new contributors are:
Yue from china
Rshah from Japan
Welsh_Dwarf from France

After that, the meeting moved onto the main subject, how to re-start Kivio
development.

Slangkamp stated the project's goal, which is to get Kivio 2.x released. He
added that the first point was to define the core features that must be
implemented to make the release possible. These must be the basic features
that are needed to make Kivio usable.

The features are listed on the following page:
http://wiki.koffice.org/index.php?title=Kivio#Features_needed_for_first_2.x_release

Yue proposed Stencils

TBScope added save and load support, as well as the ability to create simple
diagrams

Welsh_Dwarf contributed the ideas of links between elements as well as
OpenDocument (odg) support.

Slangkamp pointed out that ODG support is mostly done already, so most of the
saving and loading support is already there.

Welsh_Dwarf pointed out that to enable loading support we needed to be able to
match odg drawings to Kivio stencils

The meeting then moved on to what was already in place on these 3 features.

Slangcamp pointed out that the line end work was already started

CyrrilleB added that Ingwa was working on text on shapes, but this didn't
preclude someone else helping out

Welsh_Dwarf announced that he'd started work on stencil support, and followed
up with a question concerning scripting support which Boud answered by
providing a pointer to Kross. Slangkamp added that although a very nice
feature, scripting shouldn't be a priority for the first release.

CyrilleB pointed out that Jeremy was still around. Boud informed the meeting
that Jeremy had been badly injured in a car accident and couldn't do a lot at
the moment even though his work on line ends was almost finished. Everybody
sent him their thoughts.

After that, TBScope reminded everyone that end user documentation was also
going to be important for reviving the project. Slangkamp pointed out that
some of the 1.6 handbook could be recycled.

Slangcamp then contributed an old Kivio usability survey from 2006 (Koffice
1.6) hosted at http://wiki.koffice.org/index.php?title=Kivio

Welsh_Dwarf noted that the need for an infinate canvas was noted as important
as varied stencil support by the users. TBScope pointed out that such support
wouldn't be easy to implement. He also noted that some users would want a
defined canvas, so an option would be in order. Slangkamp added that odg had
some limits that would hinder the implementation. Various implementation
details were discussed, among them the fact that the odg limitations could be
worked around by updating the page size on saving so that the diagram always
fits on the page.

Welsh_Dwarf added that, in theory, it should be possible to define the pages
dynamically.

Slangkamp then added the feature to the release plan.

The next discussion was on custom stencil support and the need to make user
created content simpler. It was quickly decided that the Dia format was to be
privileged, with support for Koffice sml and a odg based format support also
important. It was also decided that modifying Karbone14 to be able to create
stencils would be a good idea.

The discussion then moved on to planning. The next Koffice release (2.2)
planned for April with a feature freeze begging of March, it was decided to
release Kivio with the release after.

Since everyone was interested in stencils, that is where the work will
probably start.
Yue proposed to ask his brother about designing some new stencil sets.
