Any advises on how to implement structured text editing in Lokalize?

Right now Lokalize uses std qtextedit widget with qsyntaxhighlighter -- and this is enough for gettext.
I'd like to implement XLIFF inline elements handling (I use qdomdocument to parse xml).

The first solution I see is mad-hacking with QTextCursor::insertImage and qsvgrenderer,
creating character maps to <source>/<target> children.

I'm interested in your opinion on this. Maybe i could reuse koffice/flake code, or even use it's libraries directly?
