If you are interested in the technology KOffice provides, you may also like to
take a look at wiki.koffice.org which is filled with rather interesting
stuff.
Before you actualy start to write something new from the scratch, I would
suggest to join an existing project. This has 3 advantages;
1) Code is already there and probably even working. So, you are able to learn
by reading how others did it and you may even be able to ask the developers
themself about the code. At least for me that was always the most effectiv
way to learn something :)
2) You will see fast results since to write a fix for something or extend the
app where you miss functionality is muchhhh easier then to go the long way to
start a new project from scratch and get basic things working. Specialy at
the beginning where just noone may use the result it can be a frustrating
task + if noone joins your project you may stick to learn only by reading
documentation, books, etc. rather then using the great knowledge other
developers may have and
3) The developers of the project you may like to join will be happy and maybe
on your way the results will be direct used by an already existing userbase.
