Yes and no.

As I talked about this with boudewijn the other day (another one of those 
flake threads) I said how we solved painting speed in kword (search for 
KWFrameList) and how you need to do caching anyway. In that cache you 
will have a list of all objects that intersects with the object you are 
talking about.
So, you only have to look at those. Which in practice is not many at all.
