If KDE really is as fast and memory efficient as claimed, this should not be 
an issue.  At least the code will be shared memory wise.

Again, do you really want a computation or modal dialog opened for an 
unrelated document to block the whole application?

Have you ever seen the recent file list in KOffice staying in sync between 
windows?  It only works if those windows are in the same process.  So 
depending on how I invoke KWord (running another instance or clicking File / 
New), I get different behaviour.  That is not desirable.
