Good, I looked in the generated file config.log and have found out that 
fontconfig is not (correctly) installed on my system. :-(

So perhaps you could search in your config.log and search for fontconfig and 
look at the relevant output.

(It would be nice if a Karbon developer could speak up here, because I have no 
experience with fontconfig.)
