Hi,

BTW there is an article on KOffice 1.3 in the April
issue of LINUX Magazine.

The article is by "Frank Wieduwilt. It is very
neutral, he just presents KOffice. In fact the only
negative points he makes is about filters (and Karbon
14) Some quotes :

(KWord)"The developers have also improved the use of
text frames, allowing users to complete simple DTP
tasks."

(KWord)"There are a few new filters...and the unique
capability...to directly load and edit PDF files."

(KWord)"The quality of these filters leaves a lot to
be desired, unfortunately. They should work fine with
simple documents, but with more complicated
layouts,...,the result tend to bear little resemblance
to the original document."

(KWord)"...it allows you to work far more fluently,
and is a special change on older hardware".

(KSpread)"The new import and export filters for the
OpenOffice spreadsheet application suffer from similar
failings to the KWord filters. Altough you should have
no difficulty importing simple spreadsheets, more
complex content and embedded images will cause a few
issues....no trouble at all converting to and from
Gnumeric.

(Kpresenter)"...(positive intro)...This said it is
difficult to exchange data with other programs.
...supports ony SVG and is thus incapable of imorting
files directly from other presentation programs. At
least you can export files to OO Impress format
without any trouble."

(Kugar)"Calculation fields allow you to output
results, and templates are available to create perfect
printed output".

(Karbon14)"...allows you to create simple drawings and
illustrations. The program is not suitable for precise
construction drawings,...as it lacks basic functions,
such as grids,..."

(Karbon) "The text tool is extremely powerful..."

(Karbon) "...Karbon14 is extremely unstable. The
program crashed randomly in our lab ... .You should
avoid the program in production environment for the
time being."

The final paragraph sums up that there is also KChart
and Kivio and that Kexi didn't make the KOffice 1.3
deadline, but that there will be a stable release
later this year and that Krita is incomplete.

Marc
