I went to Keith Packard's Cairographics (http://www.cairographics.org) 
tutorial today, and it was mighty interesting. He (and Carl Worth) have 
basically solved these problems for us. 
They have decent font handling (ie you still get native font support, and have 
a "toy" API for initial font handling), they have smooth rendering, almost 
everything is linear complexity, they have multiple backends, and it is even 
cross-platform compatible, the drawing system is state based, and all that 
Porter Duff compositing is done.

Worth a look for any future drawing package.
