Hi,
I propose to modify all the variable popupmenus to resemble the custom 
variable menu. This gives IMHO a more consistent ui and better 
functionallity. I removed spell checking (also for custom vars), as 
it does not work. (It is called with an empty string.)

Patch attatched.
