Just to keep you uptodate....

This screeny shows "insert knots", that means, that shapes can be refined (for 
example 2 knots are inserted into each segment):

Next screeny shows the result of 3 steps:
1) refine shapes
2) turn all lines into beziers
3) whirl trafo (distance dependant rotation)

Some tuning is still needed,  and there isn't a gui-frontend for any of these 
operations yet (<- *hint* *hint*).
