The best would be a few export filters.

However, we have again the problem that the "save" dialog/system works with 
mime types and that you cannot have mime types with the same extension.

Why export filters? A user can use it simply at save. If you want 
something like a script, you still have koconverter.

Another problem is the current simplification of the picture handling in 
KWord/KPresenter (KoPicture). We can now have unsupported formats  
(unsupported for KOffice 1.1.x), like real WMF, SVG or QT3's version of 
QPicture. Changes like these cannot be handled by just a script.

A less technical but more user-oriented problem is also that if we always 
lose compatibility to old formats without giving any possibility to overcome, 
we could get the reputation that we never take care about old formats.

However, there is also the same eternal question of who will do such filters. 
Sigh!
