I've only had the distro installed for a few weeks, so I didn't really think

Yes, this works already... although I found it by accident, hardly inituitive 
;)

If we were going to use the normal kcalc in kdeutils, then dcop comes to mind. 
But the problem of course is that you'd only want to change the value of the 
kcalc started through kspread, and not touch any others you've got lying 
around the desktop.

OK, well I quite like having a calculator in a spreadsheet -- it's quick and 
conveient for certain things. I'd quite like to make my suggested 
replacement. I'll see how that goes.
