The most visible difference is that the former killustrator/kontour was based 
on shape primitives, while karbon is path-based like illustrator and 
freehand.
But most important: kontour and karbon have a somewhat different 
culture/background. It's not easy to describe but it matters a lot for a  
hobby-project. Think of kde/gnome but less dramatic.

I think it's like evolution: either kontour and karbon are so similar that 
they can merge, or they are so different that they have the right to 
co-exist. In the end it's about having fun and learning new stuff.

Just my personal view.
