Ryan, Even without the DTDs (which as has been pointed out, KOffice does provide), any half-reasonable XML tag+attribute naming will give you some level of documentation on the semantics and structure of a document. This is certainly not the case with binary file formats. Besides, one important point is that in a world of imperfect documentation, one can always resort to the source for open code for how some part of the file format is used. Try that on Microsoft Word.
