hello,
the way i get familuar with new programs is to pick a part i want to lean 
about (ie. opening files) and trace through the program. what i mean by 
"trace" is find out where the code starts for the part you want to trace and 
step through the code so you see/follow the flow of the program.
but the most common way i get to know a program is to trying to fix a bug. 
you really don't have too much of a choice but to get a feel for the program 
in this situation.
