I am not saying that you *must* escape it! You *can* escape it. Escaping is 
for example useful with a text editor that cannot use UTF-8.

For example, A and &#65; are the same things in XML, the upper case letter A. 

By the way, as you are "debugging" fonts, you could perhaps use the qfd 
example programm of QT3 (in the directory examples/qfd .) With it you could 
perhaps find out if your problem is more a KWord problem or more a QT problem.
