Excuse my ignorance, what is the difference between a space and a non breaking
space in a WP?

In html its that 2 spaces don't get combined, and show to take the space of
2 spaces, but that is not appropriate.. 

The only thing I can imagine it to be is for example: "My&nbsp;Company"  where
the 2 words don't get split...
