 I have:
planck@linux:~ > xdpyinfo | grep resolution
  resolution:    78x81 dots per inch
planck@linux:~ > 

 I wonder if different fonts/font sizes are unavailable at different 
resolutions.  At any rate I will keep this as it is working.
