David:

I did the simpler thing: created the /etc/kderc file and restarted X.  It 
works great now.  Even the font printing problem is gone.  I can print 
TimesNewRoman now. Great!

One thing though: KFormula does not have its icon in the koshell left panel, 
but has a generic icon with the green question mark.  Can I fix that?
