KWord is being rewritten at the moment, see the KWord page on http://koffice.kde.org/
All those problems (bugs and limitations) will get fixed by this rewrite - where
undo/redo already works nicely.

I wasn't working on KWord before, so I don't exactly know why this
is happening though.
