I know that documents of koffice is a tar.gz file with a koffice extension, like kwd. The bzip2 algoritm is better than gzip, but some people haven't the bzip2, I know. So, the koffice should use both to compress the documents and the users can choose what filter (gzip or bzip2) will be used. When the koffice opens the document, it recognise what filter (gzip or bzip2) should use to decompress the document. It will be really great.
