Thanx for the hint.

I did it from the back to the front:

[doehrm@imohep ~/kde/koffice]$ kde_cv_have_mmx=1 ./configure
--with-qt-dir=$QTD
IR --x-includes=/usr/openwin/include/ --x-libraries=/usr/openwin/lib/
--prefix=
/usr/local/kde

and it did show

> checking for MMX... 1 (cached)

so it's now compiling fine.

BTW: compiling takes a huge amount of memory - up to 70 M per file...

I'll do she sh -x thing after compiling is complete.
