kspread is still in development.  XL import has alot of work remaining.

A quick perusal of the source suggests that your date format problem is 2 fold
    - XL number formats are not being imported and applied.
    - kspread does not have sufficent formating support to handle
      most of the date formats XL uses.

Importing charts is also a long way off, there is no support for importing
formulas yet.  If you're interested in helping you can probably assist the
import filter process using code from xlHtml or gnumeric.  Neither supports
charts, both support formats.
