I'm reading now the mailing list and as far as I can understand - there are
some people who are working to write a Word 97 import filter..

I've been looking at freshmeat and I found this web site:

Also, from the web site:

wv is a library which allows access to microsoft word files. It can load
and parse the word 2000,97,95 and 6 file formats. These are the file
formats known internally as word 9,8,7 and 6. wv compiles and works under
most operating systems, particularly Linux, Solaris, AIX and OSF1

so I think that using this work (it's GPL'd) can bring the Word import
filter in short time.

Also, ABIWord is using the same filter, so maybe they have done some
changes that can be incorporated to the current filter.
