If I may add another comment: this is what libkformula writes if I design a
little formula in kword:

The formula tag is actually written by kword. So that is definitely a
kde-component that doesn't use XML ;-).

I would propose myself if I wasn't already struggling to port my bibliography
program over to the koffice framework due to lack of time.
