You can use KDE 2 features -- you only need to use #ifdef NEWKDE #else #endif.
Moreover I'm sure that the KDE 1 support will be dropped when KDE 2 is out. But
until now I think it makes sense to have support for KDE 1.x since KIllustrator
is already in use by several users.

PS: Somebody willing to add canossa support to KIllustrator? I think neither Kai
nor me have presently enough time to do so. The present koffice code and the
standardalone part might be a starter.
