Hmm, I see. And if the user embeds something, this in many if not most
cases allready exists. So forcing the user to first create an empty doc
and then do File->Open is really a bit inconvenient. So it's probably
better to keep the "open existing document" option. Also for not
document centered people;)
OTOH I stay with my opinion that Cancel in the initial dialog exiting
the app is somewhat strange. IMO we can just assume that a user wants to
use the app if started, so normally doesn't want to cancel the startup.
And as second we can avoid the nondoc state by making empty doc the
default. Which in turn makes file->Exit redundant( as discussed earlier)

So my final opinion would be a startup dialog with some templates and
the option to open an existing doc, but with empty doc as default(when
hitting Cancel) and not as option. 
BTW: What about making the open existing doc thingy another tab with a
list of recently opent docs?(IIRC Lotus WordPro does it that way)
