Both in 1.6 and and 2.0, I get as many spaces as I want. I know of only one
application that doesn't do this, and that's (k)lyx (because it defers the
output to a typesetter that automatically takes care of extra space between
senteces).

In 1.6, use the print-to-pdf function. Choose print, then pdf output.
