Version 1.6 happily runs on a basic celeron or pentium 2 with 256mb of ram. My 
daughters used to use KWord on such a setup. I'm not sure how much disk space 
it takes, though.

That may depend on your distribution: most do split up koffice, some don't. 
I'm not sure about the BSD's.
