Well, you can start by reading http://techbase.kde.org/ and setting up a KDE 4 
environment, getting KOffice to build. Maybe fix a bug or two you'll find, 
add or change something and send the patches to this mailinglist for review. 
If the dev's like'em, they will ask you to improve them and apply them. In 
time, you'll learn how things work, they will ask you to get an SVN account 
yourself and you're in. If you're good enough, can spend some time, and can 
take some criticism (remember, this is about the code, not the person, so if 
they're harsh, think about that) this whole process won't even take weeks.
