No they don't, and there are an infinite number of ways to get from
point a to point b with none of them really "invalid".  But you have to
be aware of what your users are demanding and what that will lead to.  I
don't think it would be that much of a stretch if you provided something
like a word count for a paragraph or even a group of paragraphs,
somebody is going to ask if they can't get that information inserted and
updated into the document.  Doesn't mean it will happen, but you will
have to give an explanation (i.e. the time and complexity would slow
down the entire KOffice project and tie up resources).
