I was thinking about this as well. And as far as I can see there are two major
user scenarios for word count:
1) How much words, chars, etc. the *document* has — those, of course, ARE
statistics and fit very logically under the statistics menu entry (I did have
to search for it to find it a few days ago ...but when I did it was
completely logical that it was there)
2) How much words (sometimes chars, etc.) a *section* of the text has —
sometimes when writing a text a user would want to see just how much words he
used in which section, paragraph or user-selected text. This, by all logic,
is a tool and fits there.
Aditional idea: In the document structure view it would be very useful if you
could just right-click the icon/entry representing the paragraph(s), page(s),
table(s), frame(s) you wish to see the details of, and select "word count
tool" from there. This way the user does not have to select the whole
paragraph by hand if he wants to see the statistics of that part of the
document.
...so you see, IMHO we are actually talking about two things. And who says we
can't have both?
