The ODF previews on my desktop show a transparent background, so it's hardly readable what is in a file.

Of course one might argue: But there is a transparent background and it shows the truth.

Yes that's right. But from a usability perspective it is different. We might like to replace the background - just for the visual preview - if it is transparent.
