Digging deeper into the Makefiles and my overall setup and found that I had the environment variable INCLUDES set (remains from some completely unrelated project), pointing to a directory somewhere else in my filesystem tree (in no way related to koffice) But it seems the make system got confused by the contents of this variable. I removed the variable from my shell environment and compilation of koffice went straight through without any further problems!
