I realize this is not your expertise. But would you happend to know the 
answer to the follow:

Here are the two libpqxx libraries on my system (from yum). Can you tell 
me if these are the libraries required by Koffice 1.4? Or do I need to 
replace these with the latest librarires?

libpqxx.i386                             2.2.3-1.2.el4.rf       installed
libpqxx-devel.i386                       2.2.3-1.2.el4.rf       installed

If I need to replace these earlier with the most recent files, how do I 
do it? The earlier ones are rpms', the later ones are recompiled 
tarballs. Do I need to uninstall the older ones with yum and then 
install the new ones with configure, make, make install?
