Hm, I'm not sure as of how many modifications were made to KDE in
RHEL4, but unless there was something really very weird made,
installing from sources should go fine. The worst-case scenario is
that proper paths would not be detected and thus KOffice would not
work - even if this is the case, the rest of KDE will not be affected.
Also, if your distro uses some custom menu system (as is the case with
Mandriva, for instance), KOffice will not appear in your menus. Even
if this is the case, it will still be launchable from command line or
alt+f2 or something.

So, all in all, installing from sources shouldn't damage anything.
Just ensure that you have all the devel stuff you need, and things
should proceed smoothly.
