Does this .la file point to the right .so file, and not to the one in \
/usr/lib?

Is there a /usr/lib/libaspell.la? If so, then remove it, it's being found \
before the /usr/local one.

Also make sure to remove any *.la file before doing 'make' again,
since .la files store the location of the dependent libraries.
