In the kspread from my distro (probably 1.2-I'm not in front of that PC for the moment) the behaviour is as you describe. So clearly a bug. I think it is in de bugs database as n°62730 http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=62730 But in a newer version that I installed 2 weeks ago (1.2.95) the bug is clearly resolved. You can change the format of a number to text and back. And when you enter numbers that are supposed to be interpreted as text, you can use the old lotus 1-2-3 trick of preceding the number by a "'".
