Please help me with KWord

I use:
SuSE 8.2
KOffice 1.2.93

When using KWord the following error occurs:
Text files written with SuSE 8.1 can be read, but the formatting is not 
correct! Words are stretched (=gezogen). This also happens when typing in new 
text!

" w o r d s   l o o k   l i k e   t h i s "
(instead of "words look like this" which should be the normal case)

Files are named "text.kwd" for example

Can you give me any hints, please?

Questions that arise for me:

Are the text files text/plain or real KWord texts?
Does this also happen with "new" documents?
