Low down:

msi stands for microsoft installer (or some such non-sense. anyway as
of windows 2000 MS made the new format to work with Windows 2000-it
allows for "cleaner installs" and allows windows to automatically
install applications that are "published or assigned" using active
directory. they can later be reinstalled or removed automatically or
repaired without the need for human intercation. (i.e. the user
uninstalls the app while its still assigned next time they log in its
auto reinstalled) msi's are really just installation programs that have
extra data regarding their contents so windows can track which files
they install or edit and what those edits are. <bored yet?> MS now ships
most install programs in this form--I dont know if DMCA will cause any
problems as msi is touted to have built in security features.

any way that the basics
