It's likely a MIME-configuration problem. MS Word filter expects 
application/msword, check your global or local KDE configuration, look for 
$KDEDIR/share/mimelnk/application/msword.desktop and make sure MimeType is 
application/msword. This might be easier using KDE Control Center (File 
Browsing, File Association).
