I don't have any x-msword.desktop in 
/home/kde3/kde3/share/mimelnk/application/ or in 
/opt/kde3/share/mimelnk/application/. I have those two files in each 
repertory :

msword.desktop :

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Type=MimeType
MimeType=application/msword
Icon=wordprocessing
Patterns=
Comment=Microsoft Word document
Comment[af]=microsoft woord dokument
...

msword2.desktop

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Type=MimeType
MimeType=application/vnd.ms-word
Icon=wordprocessing
Patterns=
Comment=Microsoft Word document
...
