Ok. The setting in KControl was the same as for Kate and KWord. Kate gives the same error as KWord. I have found that I do not have "kspell" - is that a problem? Anyway, the command-line aspell finally gave me the clue I needed. There was a file called .aspell.english.pws on my home directory which was 0 bytes in size. aspell gave the error: The file "/home/xxx/.aspell.english.pws" is not in the proper format. I then deleted it and suddenly KWord's spell checker worked again!
