What do you mean with 'maintaining' ?
The printing of a file to PDF is easy, its just another printer target. So just 
hit print and you can create your pdf.  Its even scriptable, I don't know the 
current status of that, but IIRC things like converting a list of KWord
documents to PDF is something you can script using DCOP.

Reading an PDF as an editable document is something which is not possible
at the moment..

There is a good manual the comes with KWord (just go to the help menu) so just
start playing with it and ask again if you can't find it.
