Hi!

This is a feature, that is frequently asked. Please check koffice list
archives for older messages. There is not currently, and propably not in near
future will be another Microsoft Access style database application. There is
not really a point making database application for KOffice, since embedding
KSpread or KWord documents into a database application is not very commonly
needed feature (or the other way, embedding a database into KWord or KSpread).

Although I'm not a KOffice developer, I'll try to answer this question with
the knowledge I have about KDE and Unix like systems as well as KOffice from
a user point of view.

For database applications, there are many great apps available, most popular
free ones are propably MySql and Postgresql. I personally prefer MySql, but
some people prefer Postgresql. These are, of course applications that need
some kind of frontend (like a KDE tool for making forms, queries, inserting
data etc), since theyselves are console applications. You can find several
frontends at apps.kde.com, for example KMySql Navigator. With this
combination you will have a very powerful database system: You can use your
database application with:
	- In KDE:
frontends like KMySqlNavigator or KMySql (apps.kde.com)
	- www interface:
		Php My Admin (www.phpwizards.net)
your own php applications (read more about it in www.php.net)
	- With ODBC
from Microsoft Access or another database application
this can be a remote session secured by ssh, too
	- with text interface (not easy or intuitive, but very powerful way)

I'm sure I am not aware of many other possibilities.

Now, this is not as easy as making an Access .mdb database, but we have to
recognise, that these applications do have many other good points. They are
stable, scalable, can be used by several users at the same time etc. I once
thought myself, that it would be good to have a database application in
KOffice, but since making one is very problematic task, I've chaged my mind.

There is also a commercial database product called Rekall (produced by The
Kompany), which will be released quite soon, and will be released for free
(free to be used, not free to be hacked). I'm sure Shawn Gordon from The
Kompany will be willing to inform you about Rekall.

Since discussion about MySql is off-topic on this list, I'll try to answer
any questions in private mail.

Best Regards,
Eleknader
