Problem solved!

The reason for the incompatibility is that the file maindoc.xml in the 
beta3.5 version refers to

mime="application/x-killustrator"

Whereas that in version 1.1.0 refers to

mime="application/x-kontour"

So, to fix an old beta3.5 old.kpr file that has illustrations in it,

1) tar xzvf old.kpr

2) edit maindoc.xml  and change "x-killustrator" to "x-kontour"

3) tar czvf new.kpr part*/* maindoc.xml  documentinfo.xml pictures/*

4) kpresenter new.kpr should work

Note: although the strings "killustrator"  and "KIllustrator" also appear
in the files parts*/maindoc.xml, they should be left alone! The change 
is needed only in the top level file.
