I suppose that there will never be common formats, as a file format also 
limits what the program, in this case the wordprocessor, can do.

I do not know why you hate HTML so much. HTML was not created for the 
Internet, it was created for holding scientific documents.

Beside W3C ( http://www.w3c.org ) is exactly trying to do something like a 
common format with XHTML Modular. XHTML Modular also permits to create your 
own extensions if you need any.

(All right, the HTML import filter for KWord was not performant until very 
recently.)
